A Very Important PSA:

I've noticed some questionable things going around my group of friends and acquaintances. I wanted to make it clear that I am highly allergic to the following:

Racism. (See also, White privilege.)

Sexism.

Classism.

Rape humor. (See also, Rape culture and Victim-blaming.)

Homophobia.

Transphobia.

Body-shaming.

Slut-shaming.

Ableism.

Cultural appropriation/fetishization/exoticism.

Basically anything that takes a human being and makes them less than a human being? No. Hell fucking no.

These things kind of run rampant online under the guise of "humor," or "comedic license"--so unfortunately for a lot of Internet-only acquaintances there's not a lot of dialogue on why these things are not okay. And it's not always easy to talk about this stuff. It can be embarrassing to get called out. It might not be easy to understand, given your own personal experiences and background. You might feel the urge to say, "Why does any of this even matter?" or, "I was only joking--why are you being so harsh?"

It's important to realize that when you give in to making a joke about any of the above, you are perpetuating ignorance. You are perpetuating this casual idea that the thoughts and feelings of other people do not matter, because they are x y z. That is not okay.

Now, no one's perfect. I'm not saying, "Hey guys! Be perfect, or gtfo!" Nah, I had to learn about a lot of this on my own, because I actually don't come from a very progressive place. My parents are pretty racist. When you come from a place where hateful ideas are shared by everyone, it's easy to just follow along. But the great thing is, there are a lot of resources about ALL of this stuff out on the Internet. It's not hard to poke around and read something you didn't know.

What really frosts my cookies is when someone posts something abhorrent, gets called out on it, gets an explanation AND resources on why their stuff is grade-A nastiness, and then just shuts down the convo/sticks to their hate-guns. Yeah. I can't watch that stuff happen. I'm afraid I'm just too delicate.

So, long story short:
I will not stay in contact with anyone who willfully perpetuates hateful ignorant bullshit.
You are MORE than free to cut ties with me if you'd rather go on with any of the above. In fact, I would prefer you do so ASAP.
